How to Get Rid of Sinus Headache Naturally?

Sinus headache is a headache that is accompanied with sinusitis. It is a condition that the membranes lining your sinuses become swollen and inflamed. You may feel some pressure around your eyes, cheeks and forehead. It is just like a feeling of deep pain and pressure just above your nose and between your eyes. It can range from the normal, annoying to severe and for sometimes, it is hard to treat the problem. Many people even doctors will confuse their migraine or tension headaches as sinus headache.

Whatever the confusion, it’s always better to have diagnosis to know what type of headache it is and then start treating it according to its symptoms. Headache with its pain is only your symptom means you don’t have a sinus headache why because sinus headache is accompanied by many other symptoms of sinus problems.

1. Remedy for Sinus Headache with Hot and Cold Compress:

Hot and cold alternative compresses on the sinus affected area will help to relieve blocked sinuses and open it up to reduce the inflammation and to treat the sinus infection and headache. First apply a warm compress for about 3 minutes and then immediately after taking hot compress, place cold compress for at least 30 seconds. Do this process of alternative compress for 3 – 5 times a day to get rid of the blocked sinuses and headache.

Vitamin C is rich in antioxidants which fight against the sinus infection and helps to boost up your immune system. So, include the food that is rich in vitamin C like oranges, Lemons, pineapples, broccoli, strawberries, gooseberry, cauliflower, pomegranate, etc. in your diet. You can also take this vitamin C in the form of tea like lemon tea, lemon green tea, etc. or you can take it any other supplements.

You can make a ginger tea by cutting the fresh ginger root into slices and place it in a cup of boiling water for about 10 minutes. Strain the tea and drink this when it is still warm. 6. Remedy for Sinus Headache with Neti Pot:

The process of neti pot will increases drainage and reduces the inflammation and pressure in the nasal passages that causes the sinus headache.

Process:
  1. Take a neti pot and fill it with salt warm water (saline) solution.
  2. Go to sink and place your head over it by tilting your head to one side.
  3. Place the end corner of the neti pot into higher nostril but make sure that they is no space between the end corner and nostril.
  4. Then lift the pot so as to flow the water from higher to lower nostril.
  5. Remember to take breathe through your mouth while you’re doing this process.
  6. Take a tissue to blow your nose after completing the neti pot saline solution.
  7. Repeat the same to the other nostril to get relief from the sinus headache.
  8. Continue to do this process for twice a week to get clear from the sinus and sinus headaches.

7. Remedy for Sinus Headache with Acupressure:

Acupressure is one of the technique which helps to relieve from the sinus pressure and headache. Applying pressure at a certain pressure point which related to particular part is called acupressure. Here, coming to sinus headache, apply pressure on the point where the thumb and index figure of the hands meet. So, try to apply as much as pressure possible on that point to have immediate relief from the headache.

Steam helps to clear the nasal passage and relieve nasal congestion. It helps to calm the mucus membrane. Take a saucepan and boil water for about 10 – 15 minutes. Make a solution by using warm water and a little bit of salt. Then spray it into both the nostrils as it helps in moisturizing the nasal cavity and relieve congestion.

10. Remedy for Sinus Headache with Jalapeno Pepper:

Jalapeno peppers are spicy food which helps to give relief from the sinus headache by draining the sinuses. If that sinus is drained away then you feel relief from the headache. Process:
  1. Use your fingertips to massage gently the parts of forehead, temples, etc. where you feel that you have pain.

12. Remedy for Sinus Headache with Cinnamon:

Cinnamon is a valuable herb that deals greatly with the sinus headache by curing it effectively. Take a tablespoon of powdered cinnamon and add it with water to make it like a paste. Apply this paste on the fore head after mixing 1/2 teaspoon of sandalwood powder to the cinnamon paste. Leave it for few minutes and wash it off to have a quick relief from the sinus headache.

Tips to Reduce the Sinus Headache:

Here are some tips you can try to relieve the pain and pressure of sinus headache.
  1. Wash your hands as often as possible especially after going to bathroom and before going to eat anything which helps to avoid the upper respiratory infections that results in sinusitis.
  2. Avoid the possible irritants like smoking cigarettes, cigar, pipe smoke, allergens and other air pollutants which make the sinus membranes to swell and worse the headache.
  3. Always use humidifier or vaporizer to add moisture to your dry indoor air which prevents sinusitis. But make sure that not to overdo it as it will lead to promote mold and dust mite growth in your home. And always have your humidifier which is clean and kept free of mold.
  4. Have some ventilation into your house so that the house will not become a breeding ground for different microbes which in turn worse the situation. So, it’s important to have ventilation in your house and also let some fresh air into your house often.
  5. Take long hot showers for couple of times in a day which helps to open up the unblocked sinuses.
  6. Drink fluids more frequently to keep your body hydrated. Nasal passage become congested when the tissue in the passages become congested when the tissue in the passages is inflamed and unable to drain. So, drink plenty of water which assists with nasal decongestion. These liquids which help to bring down the pressure and inflammation that causes sinus headaches.
  7. Have a lot of rest whenever you suffer from the sinus headache as this headache will cause uncomfortable pain especially in the situation when you have congestion. So, it’s always recommended to have comfortable rest for a longer time but not to exhaust your body whenever you’re suffering from the sinus headache.
  8. Avoid consuming alcoholic drinks which may result in swelling of the sinus and nasal tissues that leads to sinus headache.

However these home remedies and tips are natural and very effective in treating the sinus headache. But make sure to consult doctor in case if your symptoms last longer for more than 10 days, having fever greater than 100.5 F, had several times of sinusitis within a year, if you won’t get cured from the headache then consulting doctor will be very helpful for treatment otherwise, it may lead to any other respiratory or sinus related health issue.
